Hypnotherapy for Trauma and PTSD

Trauma and PTSD are conditions that can have a devastating impact on people's lives. Trauma is an emotional response to a deeply distressing event, and PTSD is a recognised disorder that can develop after exposure to a traumatic event or series of events. These conditions can cause problems such as flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbness, social isolation, and difficulty carrying out normal activities.

How can Hypnotherapy help overcome Trauma and PTSD?

Hypnotherapy can help people overcome their trauma and PTSD by providing a safe and effective way to address the underlying issues. Hypnotherapy can help people to release the emotions associated with trauma, to process their experiences in a healthy way, and to develop coping mechanisms for dealing with future stressors.

When people experience trauma their body and mind go into fight or flight mode. The brain releases chemicals to help prepare the body to fight, flee or in some cases to freeze. In those moments the normal processing of events is halted and our brains don't process and file away the memory as they would under other circumstances. This often results in people who have experienced trauma having physical reactions and emotions as if the trauma is still occurring. In these cases, the mind does not know the threat is no longer there. This is why trauma can be so debilitating and can prevent people from feeling they can live a normal, productive life.

When we are in the state of hypnosis we are able to work with the subconscious mind and allow traumatic events to be processed as if they are filed away in the past so they no longer feel so impactful in the present time. This does not mean you will forget the event ever happened, but it does allow you to recall the event without the same strong emotional and physical response.

Hypnotherapy is a safe and effective way to address the underlying issues associated with trauma and PTSD. As opposed to traditional talking therapy, hypnotherapy for trauma and PTSD does not require the person to talk about the traumatic events. An approach called content free hypnotherapy, allows memories to be processed without detailed discussion.

When people are in the state of hypnosis we are able to process events in a way that does not feel like they are happening now, they may recall the memory but through the perspective of an observer. This allows the person to work with the memory therapeutically without repressing it or dissociating from it.

How hypnotherapy for trauma and PTSD sessions work.

Following your initial telephone consultation, your first hypnotherapy session will be 1.5hrs and can take place in person at the Cheshire Wellness Centre or via Zoom.

I will talk you through the process and it's normal that you may be a little anxious to start so we make sure you are fully ready to begin before I guide you into a relaxing state of hypnosis. During the sessions together we will work on reprocessing memories and the emotions associated with them, we will also work on reducing the perception and impact of any triggers related to the trauma. I will also teach you a self-hypnosis technique to allow you to practice this in-between sessions.

I recommend 4 sessions as a minimum for trauma as it is often multi-layered. If you need more then we can agree that as you progress through the sessions. The first session is 1.5hrs and the subsequent sessions are 1hr.
