Hypnosis is a natural state that we can all move into at any time. For children, it's considered that they are nearly always in a state of hypnosis. Their mind is open, absorbing everything around them and is constantly learning. Children are experts at using their imaginations - a process that with the right guidance can help them change or release issues. 

Is Hypnosis for Children Safe?

As hypnosis is a natural state it is perfectly safe for children to have hypnotherapy. The age from which most children can follow along in a hypnotherapy session is 8 yrs and therefore I don't typically work with children younger than that. However, children develop at different speeds so if you wished to discuss if hypnotherapy would be suitable for your child please do get in touch. 



What can hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy can help children deal with a wide range of issues, from bed-wetting to self-esteem and confidence. It's important you find a hypnotherapist with experience in working with children who can build a natural rapport with them. 

My hypnotherapy certification included specific training to work with children and prior to going to university to study psychology, I was a fully qualified nursery nurse working in both private nurseries and school settings. 

However, you, as the parent/guardian know your child best, so to establish if I would be the right person to help we can have a telephone consultation and even schedule a zoom introduction meeting if that is helpful for you.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session for children? 

Under the age of 16 yrs, a hypnotherapy session must take place with a parent or guardian present. Sessions can take place either in-person or online - I recommend children under 10 yrs of age have in-person sessions only. During the first session, I will talk with you and your child to put them at ease, and depending on their age I will either use a storytelling visualisation approach or fun hypnotic techniques that children really like to experience.

How should I explain a hypnotherapy session to my child? 

This really depends on their age and how aware they are. For young children, you could explain that you are going to talk with someone who will is a storyteller like a teacher in school. If your child is more aware of their issue, for example bed-wetting you can explain that I will help them to stay dry through the night. For older children and teenagers, typically I explain the session as a mindfulness practice. Most older children will have heard of this and even experienced mindfulness or relaxation sessions in school. 

How many hypnotherapy sessions will be needed for my child?

This will really depend on the issue we are working on and I will give you a more accurate idea of the number of sessions during your consultation call. However, most children respond very quickly to hypnosis as they do not have the same conscious barriers as adults do. This means that typically you should see a difference after 2 -3 sessions or for more complex issues 3-4 sessions.
