Hypnotherapy for Disordered Eating and Body Image

There are many different types of disordered eating. Some people may only eat certain types of foods, while others may limit their calorie intake or use purging as a way to control their weight. People with disordered eating often have a negative body image and maybe obsessed with food and their weight. Disordered eating can lead to serious health problems, so it's important to get help if you think you may have a problem.

What Is Disordered Eating?

Disordered Eating is not the same as a clinically defined eating disorder. There is no definitive clinical definition for disordered eating, however, it is recognised amongst eating disorder specialists that disordered eating can, if not addressed, lead to a more serious eating disorder.

The term disordered eating describes various abnormal eating behaviours such as binging or being obsessed with the type of food eaten. For people with disordered eating, these patterns of eating behaviour can vary over time, for example sometimes restricting food, sometimes binging or sometimes being focussed solely on one specific type of diet. The underlying common theme with disordered eating is the thoughts and feelings around food and how someone feels about their own body.

People with disordered eating often have warning signs that they may be struggling. Some common signs include obsessing over food and weight, constantly dieting, excessive exercising, constantly feeling guilty after eating, and body image issues.

How can hypnotherapy help disordered eating?

We are hardwired to use food to self-soothe or to connect with other people. Think about crying babies who are comforted when they are fed and celebrations with others that most often involve food.  However, for some, the degree to which somebody is using food behaviours to cope with difficulties in their life or to cope with how they feel about themselves differentiates whether the coping methods are masking deeper issues that need addressing.

Hypnotherapy can help with shedding light on the underlying reasons why people use food in a disordered way. For many, these reasons may not be known at the conscious level and so hypnotherapy allows us to identify subconscious beliefs resulting in the behaviours and past experiences that may have shaped those beliefs.  An important aspect for many people with disordered eating is the feeling of self-worth and body image, these two very key elements can be improved over time with the support of hypnotherapy techniques.

Considering Hypnotherapy for Disordered Eating and Body Image

Before agreeing that hypnotherapy is the right approach for you, it is very important that we have a consultation around your disordered eating. Hypnotherapy is not suitable if you are showing signs of an eating disorder, for example, if you are severely restricting your food to the point of it affecting your health. In these circumstances, you should contact your doctor for advice.

If following the consultation we considered hypnotherapy would be beneficial for you then I will design a tailored programme to meet your specific needs, this will include a combination of hypnotherapy, NLP and EFT.
